Shortly after 2.30am yesterday police were called to reports of a collision on Bury New Road between a silver Mercedes Vito and a pedestrian.
Officers attended and the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Although police have told us the victim was in his 30s and have yet to formally identify him he has been named locally as 24 year old Aidan Worthington.
The driver remained at the scene and no arrests have been made.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or saw a man walking along Bury New Road or Butterstile Lane to get in touch.
PC Peter Cunningham from GMP’s serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This is a tragic incident and my heart goes out to the man’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
“We are working to establish the exact circumstances leading up to the collision and we are hoping the public might have information which could help this investigation and give this man’s family the answers they deserve.
“If you witnessed what happened, or if you saw the silver Mercedes Vito or the pedestrian prior to the collision, please get in touch with us as soon as possible. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone with dashcam footage.”
