Amazing Facts

It is estimated that in 2010/11 a whopping 100,000 tonnes of paper and card in Greater Manchester was not recycled because it was not put in the correct recycling container – that is the same weight as 25,000 African elephants!

In the UK we send over 600 million Christmas cards each year; that’s a whole lot of paper, around 1,800 tonnes, the equivalent of 400 African elephants!

Each tonne of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 KW of energy and 7000 gallons of water.

To grow enough trees to provide the amount of paper that Britain uses each year, you would need a forest the size of Wales.

The average British family throws away 6 trees worth of paper in their household bin a year.

Wasting food costs the average family with children around £680 a year, or £50 a month.

If we all stopped wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.

We actually throw away more food from our homes than packaging in the UK every year.

It is estimated we throw away over 6 million real Christmas trees during the festive season which produces an extra 9,000 tonnes of waste.
