Three men are in hospital after being stabbed and beaten as they lay in the wreckage of a crashed car in Radcliffe.
One man is fighting for his life after a road pursuit ended in the crash victims being attacked by men with baseball bats.
At about 12.40am today, Tuesday 29 May 2012, police received a report that a silver Vauxhall Astra had collided with a tree on Bury Road, Radcliffe.
It is believed the car had been pursued by two other cars before it collided with the tree. The occupants of the other vehicles got out, armed themselves with baseball bats and knives, and set about the other men.
They repeatedly hit them with the bats and stabbed them with knives, leaving all three occupants with injuries.
One victim, a 30 year-old man from Bolton, suffered multiple fractures and swelling on the brain and is now in a life-threatening condition.
Two other men suffered minor stab wounds and a cut to the head.
Detective Chief Inspector Lynne Vernon, of Bury CID, said: "This was an exceptionally violent incident that will quite rightly shock the community in Radcliffe.
"One man is now fighting for his life and two others received less serious injuries. We are at a very early stage of the investigation and cannot speculate on what led up to this incident. We also do not have a full description of the pursuing vehicles.
"A scene will remain open for some time so unfortunately there could be some local disruption, however we are doing our best to get back to normal as soon as possible.”
