Special service at the Town Hall
Holocaust Memorial Day, this year titled ‘Speak Up and Speak Out’ will be commemorated in Bolton on Friday, January 27 at 11am.
The Mayor of Bolton, Councillor Noel Spencer, will open the town’s annual Holocaust Memorial Ceremony, which this year marks the 68th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp.
Taking place in the Festival Hall, at Bolton Town Hall, the ceremony will pay tribute to all communities affected by the Holocaust, with the Bishop of Bolton in attendance alongside the Leader of the Council, Councillor Cliff Morris; other party representatives from the council; representatives from Bolton’s faith groups and pupils from local schools
Candles of hope will be lit, and those attending will be invited to sign the Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 Pledge during the ceremony.
The event is organised by the Bolton Interfaith Council, in partnership with Bolton Council.
The Mayor said, "We should never forget the horror of the Holocaust. It was unique in one very particular way, being the one time in history when human beings industrialised the killing of their fellow human beings.
"I hope that Bolton residents will come together and take time to remember the suffering endured by those who suffered in the Holocaust – Jews as well as gypsies, Roma People as well as many disabled and gay people. I hope the spirit of One Bolton will ensure that we lead the way in ensuring the future is one where individual differences are respected in an inclusive society.”
