Detective Chief Inspector Lynne Vernon said, "There is no place for this type of behaviour on the streets of Heywood, this level of violence is simply not acceptable and we want to identify those responsible.
"The actions of these men have left their victim in a critical condition. We have identified one of the suspects, but are keen to speak to anyone who might have any information about the other men involved. If you have any information about their identity, please contact the police as soon as possible.
"It was the early hours of the morning, however there were people on their way home from a night out. I am sure someone has seen something, or if you were part of the group involved in the fight and wants to tell us what has happened, please get in touch."
